Karl Vagts began his career in Delaware County law enforcement as a Deputy Sheriff on April 29, 1985.  Recognition of his dedication and excellent performance throughout his career Karl has received with various promotions:

• May 29, 1988:              Deputy Sheriff Sergeant 
• August 22, 1990:        Deputy Sheriff Lieutenant
• January 21, 1991:       Deputy Sheriff Investigator
• January 1, 2001:         Deputy Sheriff Senior Investigator

In his current title, Senior Investigator Vagts serves as the Supervising Investigator in the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division.  He also supervises the Road Patrol Division, making him responsible for the overall supervision of law enforcement operations.

What Karl likes the most about his job is the diversity and mental challenge. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities to use your resourcefulness and past experience to develop insightful solutions to complex investigations.  One must be responsible and completely invested when presented with dangerous situations and assume responsibility for the safety of others.   

Karl continues to be a consummate professional. As such, he was acknowledged as Delaware County’s employee of the month in August, 2004,  yet, he is not one to rest on his laurels.  He has been challenged with conducting major investigations and supervising our Drug Enforcement unit with its challenging task of combatting our county’s grievous drug addiction problem. Recently he has been successful in leading investigations that netted some significant drug dealers. Karl is highly respected by his peers in the law enforcement community and has distinguished himself there by word and deed. He possesses tremendous resourcefulness and is an invaluable asset to the Sheriff’s Office.

As a testament to Karl’s service as a law enforcement officer, Sheriff Mills states, “In my nearly 50 years in law enforcement, I have met few individuals as trustworthy as Karl Vagts”.

Karl is a devoted son and brother.  His hobbies include hunting, fishing and camping in the wilderness.
